Rep Cinema Toronto

This Week in Rep Cinema: Little Terrors, Family Portrait in Black & White, Une femme douce, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort, Castle in the Sky

This Week in Rep Cinema features second run and classic film selections from cinemas such as The Fox, The Revue, The Royal, Toronto Underground Cinema, the Projection Booth, TIFF Bell Lightbox and more.

Witness Gary Oldman and George Clooney's Oscar nominated performances as Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy and The Descendants move into The Fox or catch Cronenberg's latest release, A Dangerous Method, which was swiftly in and out of first-run cinemas and makes an appearance this week at the Revue Cinema. The film captures the rough love-triangle between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung over the romantic attentions of Sabina Spielrein, a former patient turned psychoanalyst herself. For everything else, there's this week in rep cinema!

TUESDAY MARCH 6 / LITTLE TERRORS: HIDDEN WORLDS / PROJECTION BOOTH / 9PM
Everybody's favourite short horror film series returns featuring a selection of shorts to scare your socks off. This month features two shorts about two very different serial killers with Toronto After Dark selection Prick and Prey, a piece about a very sinister oral STD in Cold Sore and Good Morning, Beautiful, about a man losing touch with reality after the loss of his daughter. And zombie fans rejoice, the night caps off with Opstandelsen, a Danish zombie film set in the catacombs of a church. Tickets are $10 and can be purchased at the cinema.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 7 / FAMILY PORTRAIT IN BLACK & WHITE / ROYAL CINEMA / 7PM

While on the outside this may seem like an inspiring documentary about Ukranian foster mother Olga who houses 23 children under her roof, it is truly a more complex tale than that. In this difficult documentary that made waves at Sundance and Hot Docs last year, we're presented with a family of bi-racial children in a country that is overwhelmingly white and a foster mother weakening under the pressure to raise these children the best way she knows how, with a little help from the "Great Leader." Tickets are $10 and can be purchased 30 minutes before the screening.

THURSDAY MARCH 8 / UNE FEMME DOUCE / TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 6PM
Une Femme Douce is a suffocating drama about a young, narcissistic husband trying to comprehend his quiet wife's alleged suicide. In flashbacks and bits of memory, their relationship and her story is pieced together through his frame of reference and the audience is implored to form their own opinion on the situation at hand. A wonderful piece of interpretive cinema, young model Dominique Sanda does a wonderful turn in her first cinematic role as the tragic housewife. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the cinema.

FRIDAY MARCH 9 / LES DEMOISELLES DE ROCHEFORT / INNIS TOWN HALL / 7PM

And for an entirely different piece of French cinema, Les Demoiselles de Rochefort is Jacques Demy's '60s pop musical about two artistic sisters (twin sisters in fact) trying to make it on their own in Paris; a charming fable of Parisian life and of love. When their mother rolls into town after breaking up with her boyfriend of a decade, all three women embark on romantic journeys couched within musical interludes. Will the girls find success and love in Paris? Will their mother find a new love? You'll just have to see it to find out. Screening as part of CINSSU's Free Friday Films, admission is first come first serve.

SATURDAY MARCH 10 / CASTLE IN THE SKY / TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 7PM
Experience the first ever official 'Studio Ghibli' film for the first time again, or the first time ever as Spirited Away: The Films of Studio Ghibli opens this week at the Lightbox. The studio that eventually brought the world Princess Mononoke and recently, The Secret World of Arrietty, comes a tale of Laputa, a mysterious Atlantis-like flying city that our protagonist Sheeta is desperate to find. With a magical crystal that might lead the way, she joins forces with sky pirates in an effort to find and unlock the mystical city. Tickets are $12 and can be purchased at the cinema.
