This week in film rounds up the most noteworthy independent screenings and cinema-related events happening in Toronto.

MONDAY JUNE 6TH / JANE EYRE / BLOOR CINEMA / 9:30PM
Instead of wasting your time with X-Men:First Class, see Michael Fassbender in a role that requires actual depth of character, emotion and warmth, that being the complicated role of Mr. Rochester in Jane Eyre. While Mia Wasikowska does a very dedicated interpretation of the title role, it's Fassbender's portrayal of her love interest that really tied this film together. He was neither too young, nor too old, too handsome or homely, wide open for affection with just a touch of danger to him. A very strong adaptation that got lost in the spring is available to see again, take a look. Tickets are $9 and can be bought at the cinema.

TUESDAY JUNE 7TH / SECRET BEYOND THE DOOR / TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 6:30PM
Fritz Lang's modern retelling of the Bluebeard fable continues to teach the lesson that marrying strangers you meet while abroad is not a wise thing to do. In this instance, spoiled socialite Celia meets a handsome, broody Mark while on vacation and there's just something about his cool demeanor that sets her heart aflutter. As soon as you can say "marriage of convenience" she's been locked up in his spooky mansion, discovers he has an obsession with homicide and keeps a creepy housekeeper who could be the scariest thing of all. Thanks to the light touch that Lang has, every scene is as full of foreboding and fear as the next. Tickets are $12 and can be bought at the cinema or online.

WEDNESDAY JUNE 8TH / THE PRINCESS OF MONTPENSIER / TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 6:30pm & 9:30pm
What Jane Eyre is to romantic and intellectual companionship, The Princess of Montpensier is to bodice-ripping, court politics and swordplay. Set around the time of the Catholic-Hugenot civil war, a young wealthy noblewoman is torn away from her handsome lover and forced, by the good graces of her family, to marry his cousin who is a prince and a more suitable match. But after the new couple is separated shortly after the wedding, she's left with a stable of handsome men all fighting for her attention and with each other. A popcornish period flick for those who yearn for something more akin to the Douglas Fairbanks days of film. Tickets are $12 and can be bought at the cinema or online.

THURSDAY JUNE 9TH / JAWS & GRIZZLY DOUBLE BILL / TORONTO UNDERGROUND CINEMA / 7PM & 9:30PM
Here is your itinerary for Thursday evening. At 7pm you can see Jaws, the classic summer blockbuster about an unstoppable shark with an unquenchable thirst for blood. Once the carnage has fallen by the wayside, continue on with Grizzly at 9:30pm. Grizzly takes the premise of Jaws and features an unstoppable predator feasting on humans but turns itself into a farce when the poor park ranger in charge of stopping the fifteen-foot beast is constantly battling drunken hunters along the way. Tickets are $8 for each movie or $14 for the double bill and can be bought at the cinema.

FRIDAY JUNE 10TH / TRAILER TRASH / TORONTO UNDERGROUND CINEMA / 9:30PM
Do you have a short attention span of, say, two minutes? Are you one of those people who absolutely must be at the cinema on time in order to catch all the (mostly terrible) trailers? Did you attend the Grindbox installation at the Lightbox during Nuit Blanche last September? If you answered yes to any of these questions then I highly recommend attending Trailer Trash at the Underground for a night of trashy and fun classic trailers from the Conflict Archives. Tickets are $8 and can be bought at the cinema.

SATURDAY JUNE 11TH / BRAIN DAMAGE / TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 11PM
The first film in the new late-night screening series The Best of Midnight Madness is a real head-scratcher. Not unlike the more famous zombie films, Brain Damage features Aylmer, a particularly villainous brand of space slug who uses his hapless host Brian to find feast after feast of brains for him. In return, he dopes up Brian better than any drug known to mankind. This black comedy features some unforgettably gory scenes between Brian and Aylmer that you will find yourself revisiting at the most awkward of moments. Tickets are $12 and can be bought at the cinema or online. This film is also completely rated R, so don't bring your kids. Please.

SUNDAY JUNE 12TH / THE MUPPET MOVIE / REVUE CINEMA / 2PM
While we still have 5 months before the release of the Jason Segel-headed Muppets film, spend this Sunday at the Revue Cinema revisiting the Muppets first filmic appearance. The Muppet Movie begins with the Muppets watching...The Muppet Movie, a fictionalized version of how the Muppets all began. A highly meta-textual film that amps up the bizarre style of humour that ran amok on The Muppet Show, it's your classic Hollywood story about a small town kid (Kermit) making his way to the big city to make it as a star, accumulating a small group of fuzzy friends along the way, except it is all done Muppets style! Tickets are $6 and can be bought at the cinema.
