This week in film rounds up the most noteworthy independent screenings and cinema-related events happening in Toronto.

MONDAY MARCH 28TH / BARNEY'S VERSION / FOX THEATRE / 6:45PM
This is a shout out for those in the Beaches (or those who just love the classy classy Fox) that now is a great time to see (in my humble opinion) the best Canadian film from 2010. Barney's Version, based on the Mordecai Richler novel, tells the story of Barney, a hapless womanizer who does indeed meet his third wife at the wedding to his second and may also have had something to do with the death of his alcoholic best friend. But that's only one part of the story. The film will be playing all week at the Fox, check the website for showtimes. Tickets are $7 for members and $10 for non-members and can be bought at the cinema.

TUESDAY MARCH 29TH / BOOK REVUE PRESENTS OUT OF SIGHT / REVUE CINEMA / 6:45PM
To begin with, The Book Revue is not your average, run of the mill book club. Presented by Geoff Pevere, the Book Revue picks a novel that has been successfully adapted into cinematic format, shows the film in its entirety and then the theatre is brought into a led discussion of the themes and why it works. This month you can feast your eyes on the captivating caper, Out of Sight, a book written by contemporary novelist Elmore Leonard who has had the rare pleasure of seeing his work adapted skillfully after quite a few tries. Tickets are $10 for members, $12 for non-members and can be bought at the cinema.

WEDNESDAY MARCH 30TH / BUBBA HO-TEP / TORONTO UNDERGROUND CINEMA / 7PM
Let's see if I can get this straight for you. Bubba Ho-Tep stars Bruce Campbell as an aging Elvis Presley, relegated to an old folks home with a roommate who insists he's JFK, patched up, hidden, painted black for his own safety and abandoned after Lyndon Johnson forgot about him. That should be enough on it's own, but to thicken the plot, there's an evil mummy kicking around who is too slow to pick on the young and decides to snack on the elderly. Naturally, the King has a few choice things to say about that. Tickets are $8 and can be bought at the cinema.

THURSDAY MARCH 31ST / ONE MINUTE FILM & VIDEO FESTIVAL / TORONTO UNDERGROUND CINEMA / 7PM
The One Minute Film Festival returns this Friday after a 2 year hiatus with a whole new batch of films from local filmmakers, Canadian filmmakers and international artists as well. The new films for this year were asked to follow the cryptic theme "social/media" in any interpretation the filmmaker sought fit, while the remaining 30 will include favourites from years past. Tickets are $10 and can be bought at the cinema.

FRIDAY APRIL 1ST / MONOGAMY / THE ROYAL CINEMA / 7PM
Three months shy of marrying the 'perfect woman', a photographer begins a creepy side project that starts to infiltrate his relationship and his life. The service is Gunshoot, a surveillance package that a client buys to discover what they really look like, just when they think nobody is watching. But when a client attracts too much of his attention, sexual and otherwise, his relationship starts looking tame in comparison. Tickets are $10 and can be bought at the cinema. SATURDAY APRIL 2ND / KRULL / TIFF BELL LIGHTBOX / 2PM
You could see a good movie this weekend, or you could see Krull, a movie best remembered by some as that boulder dodging game they never played at the arcade. And by some I mean my boyfriend. For the rest of us, Krull was one of the many Star Wars knock-offs released in the early 80's, only this time with a fantasy bent. Featuring early appearances by Robbie Coltrane (over-dubbed with somebody elses voice) and Liam Neeson, this film takes you to the world of Krull, where Prince Colwyn has to rescue Princess Lyssa from the evil Beast with the magical Glaive. Yeahhhhh. Oh, and there's a cyclops. Tickets are $12 and can be bought at the cinema or online.

SUNDAY APRIL 3RD / HOUSE / BLOOR CINEMA / 9:20PM
Japanese 'Fairy-tale-fever-dream' House returns to the Bloor Cinema on Sunday and I IMPLORE you to run, not walk, to the theatre. This film incorporates classic Japanese spiritual ghosts and gags but unleashes the chaos only halfway through the film, the first part being a super-genki-musical-teen-comedy. Rumour has it that the film was directed by a middle aged man but written by a pre-teen girl, and if so? It answers soooo many things. But rest assured, you will not soon forget this movie. Tickets are $7 for members and $10 for non-members and can be bought at the cinema.
