Doc Soup Season Starts Wednesday

The first film of the 2008/09 Doc Soup weekly documentary series will screen this Wednesday at the Bloor Cinema. Trouble the Water (trailer above) tells the story of the disaster that was Hurricane Katrina and includes extensive raw footage of a New Orleans family's experience before and after the storm hit.

Privy to an advance copy, I personally loved the perspective of the film. With camera in hand, the family had the foresight to roll tape just as news about the hurricane was being reported as well as during the storm itself as they sought refuge in their attic as water levels began to rise.

But for those who followed the events closely and have seen Spike Lee's excellent When The Levees Broke I fear there may not be a ton of new information here. Nevertheless, the doc has received favourable reviews from critics and won the 2008 Sundance Grand Jury Prize (Documentary).

This is Trouble the Water's first ever screening in Canada. Showtimes are 6:30 & 9:15 pm. Tickets are $12.
