Edward Yang's YiYi

This Week in Film: March 7th 2008

The Genies were this week, and while it was mostly a sweep by Away from Her and Eastern Promises, Fido did get a win for Art Direction, Radiant City won for Best Documentary and blogTO's much beloved Madame Tutli-Putli picked up Best Animated Short. Madame Tutli-Putli can still be seen at the National Film Board this weekend.

If you haven't already been enchanted by Amy Adams due to her work in Junebug and, well, Enchanted, perhaps you will be converted after seeing her in the role of Delysia Lafosse in newly released comedy Miss Pettigrew Lives for A Day. I was skeptical that she could hold her own under the always-fantastic Frances McDormand but the two women seemed nicely paired off in the film, which follows a nanny who unwittingly cons her way into becoming a social secretary for a flighty wannabe actress.

And while behemoth that is Canadian Music Week is this weekend, as you've no doubt already heard, were you also aware that it has a film festival component? With two screenings left, one of Songs from the Soul tonight and D Tour: A Tenacious D Documentary on Saturday, there is still more to experience. Both screenings will be at the Royal at 6:30pm with a short Q&A following the films.

The Cinematheque's retrospective, Edward Yang's Taipei Stories begins tonight and will feature all 8 works by the Taiwanese director who died well before his time. Tonight's film is the aforementioned, Taipei Story with YiYi, his most famous film, on Saturday March 15th.

Cinssu's Free Friday Film this week is the smarmy Scorsese film Casino, while on Monday they have a sneak preview of the remake of Funny Games, starring Naomi Watts. Passes can be picked up at an office on campus or at tonight's screening of Casino.
