Iraq in Fragments @ the Royal starting tomorrow

Oscar-nominated feature documentary Iraq in Fragments is coming to the Royal Cinema tomorrow for a one-week run, if you want a chance to screen it before the Oscars hand down their judgment on Sunday night. The film, directed by James Longley, played Sundance last year and features three intimate stories of the war-torn region.

Is it enough to bag the Oscar for best doc? Against the juggernaut of An Inconvenient Truth, even a pointed documentary revolving around the United States' current war effort may not be enough. Truth is a terrible documentary as documentaries go, being more a recording of a speech (albeit a great speech) than an actual piece of filmcraft, but there's no denying the overwhelming cultural impact that it has had on the American consciousness in the past year, even going so far as to help see Mr. Gore nominated for a Nobel prize.

Iraq in Fragments plays at the Royal every evening for the coming week, from February 23 to March 1. (Truth, incidentally, is available in a gorgeous slimline eco-friendly DVD package, if you feel like dropping $25 at HMV.)
