LG Fashion Week Designers

The Faces of LGFW: Kate Mullin, designer relations

From PR pros to runway stomping models, there are lots of different types of people who make LG Fashion Week go 'round. For the next few days, I'll be writing about some of them. Today, the gal behind the designers

Name: Kate Mullin, 24
Day job: Designer relations for the FDCC and The Fashion Collective roster
Twitter: @FSNCollective

Why you should care: During LGFW, Kate Mullin is a flurry of curls and heels running from corner to corner, from backstage to runway. She works with fashion management agency The Fashion Collective and oversees designer relations of her clients with the FDCC's counterpart. So what exactly is designer relations? Mullin works tirelessly between seasons to schedule and consult on Collective shows, secure models, ensure the right people show up, and plan the logistics of it all. With partners Dwayne Kennedy and Brian A. Richards, the Fashion Collective also produces all their own shows, and, well, that's a lot of work. It's a continuous process and the girl is always BBM-ing someone about something. This season, I counted 11 designers Mullin and the Collective have worked with on the official schedule (Chloe comme Parris, Amanda Lew Kee among them), helping with show styling and presentation, and they also act as intermediaries between new designers and the FDCC. It's largely because of Mullin that new talent has been able to find a place at LGFW. That's something to salute.

The designer you'd most like to work with: George Antonopoulos [he released his first collection in collaboration Danier this fall]
For the newbies, a survival tip: Always carry a pair of heels and lip balm - that medicated, heavy duty stuff
Most challenging part of your LGFW: Dealing with serious Prima Donnas
If you ran LGFW, you would: Move it all over the city, into interesting spaces like galleries and warehouses or even designer's studios. I'd remove that air of exclusivity or any pretension

Mullin's Toronto Hit List
Where to shop: Narwhal
Where to eat: Sandwich Box
Where to hang: Painted Lady
Where to hide: On Baldwin, but I'm hiding
Where you call home: Parkdale
