OPENING & CLOSING

• Hogtown Pub & Oysters has taken over the space formerly occupied by the The Auld Spot Pub at 633 College Street. The original two owners of Auld Spot split with one still helming the Danforth location and the other re-branding (and re-tooling) this College St. spot.
• GLAS is opening soon in the old Frankly Eatery space in Leslieville. A sign on the door written by Chef Dan Pantano says he's been training in Michelin starred kitchens in Europe for 8 years but this is his first venture as an owner/operator. Expect an evolving food and wine menu featuring local and seasonal ingredients.
• The Mad Italian Gelato Bar is opening a third location sometime this July at the corner of Danforth and Carlaw. The owners have rolled out a franchise model so expect these guys to be popping up everywhere in the years to come.
• Origin Restaurant's second location in Liberty Village is now open at 171 East Liberty Street in the old Liberty Noodle space. There are 150 seats, a 60 seat patio, plus a raw and tostada bar.
• The Burger Press is now open on Bathurst just south of Queen. Prepare to order your burgers by the ounce, or for non-carnivores, there's a falafel burger and salads.

UPCOMING EVENTS

• The Depanneur (1033 College Street) hosts a drop-in Tapas Night tonight starting at 6pm. Vik Sharma of La Natura Fine Foods prepares a a veggie friendly Mediterranean inspired spread. Sample each dish for $3 or a tasting plate for $12.
• St. Lawrence Market celebrates the beginning of berry season with a Strawberry Festival on Saturday, June 16th. Enjoy strawberry waffles, shortcake, tarts and more, served up at various times from 10am to 1pm, or take part in a jam-making workshop.
• The Stop's Night Market pops-up for a sold out evening on Wednesday, June 20th from 7 to 11pm in the Honest Ed Alley (581 Bloor Street West).
• Monthly charity dinner, Food for Change takes place Thursday, June 21. The five-course meal is $75 or $120 with wine pairings and proceeds go to The Stop's programs to fight hunger.
• Matt Kantor (Secret Pickle, Hidden Kitchen) rocks out on Wednesday, July 18th with Rush As Food, a nine-course dinner. Seats are limited for this $150 all-inclusive feast to be held at The Cookbook Store (850 Yonge Street).
• Dishcrawl takes on Hogtown this July with a series of bacon-fueled dinners at Beast Restaurant (96 Tecumseth Street) on July 7th, Le Canard Mort (896 Queen Street East) on July 10th, The Good Fork (2432 Bloor Street West) on July 11th, and Blue Plate (392 Roncesvalles Avenue) on July 17th. Tickets are $80 each dinner and available now.

CHEFS

• Chef de Cuisine Derek Bendig of Pangaea Restaurant (1221 Bay Street) is moving on and heading west to become executive chef at an Okanogan resort.

OTHER NEWS

• Sneaky Dee's marks a quarter century at the corner of Bathurst and College. Celebrate on Monday, June 25th from 2 to 5 pm with free King's Crown Nachos when you bring a non-perishable food item to donate.
• Poutini's House of Poutine at 1112 Queen Street West, celebrates its 3rd year on Sunday, June 17 with a BOGO offer from noon 'til 9pm.
