This Week in Food: Lil'Baci Taverna, Easy Restaurant open second locations, Borscht throw down at Caplansky's, Chef Mischa bids farewell to Marben

This Week in Food rounds up the week's food news, restaurants openings and closings, chef movements and upcoming food events in Toronto. Find us here every Friday morning.

OPENINGS & CLOSINGS

  • Leslieville pizzeria Lil' Baci is set to open an uptown location the second week of May. Lil'Baci Taverna (2013 Yonge Street) will serve up small plates of Italian fare from Chef Larry Santos.
  • Also opening a second location this May, is Roncesvalles greasy spoon Easy Restaurant at 713 College Street (formerly Sit in Bangkok).
  • Buster's Sea Cove will be taking their already popular St. Lawrence Market menu to the streets this spring with addition of a new food truck.
  • Chef Corbin Tomaszeski of C5 is opening fondue franchise, The Melting Pot (125-135 York Boulevard) in Richmond Hill this spring.
  • Renovations at Little Anthony's are complete and the rebranded restaurant has now opened as LA's Italian Bar (121 Richmond Street).
  • As we reported earlier this week, La Carnita announced it's setting up shop in the former digs of Briscola at 501 College Street. The new taquería is set to open in June.

UPCOMING EVENTS

  • The Depanneur hosts a drop-in dinner tonight (Friday, April 20th) featuring $10 servings of Carne Asada or Rajas Burritos from Mexi-Can Market.
  • Bubbie Battle: Borscht throws down at Caplansky's (356 College Street) at 5pm on Sunday, April 22nd.
  • Spledido (88 Harbord Street) hosts the ongoing series, Canadian Beer News Dinner #3 on Friday April 27th in the restaurant's intimate (read: reserve now) wine cellar. Chef Victor Barry prepares six courses served with a selection of 8 beers from importers Roland + Russell.
  • Crickets, I mean tickets are on sale now for Future Food Salon II. This fundraiser for the Centre for Social Innovation's Food Constellation features a a canapé reception and Chef Nathan Isberg (Atlantic) serving cricket tastes. Tickets are available now for May 10th event taking place 6:30pm to 8:30pm at the Centre for Social Innovation (720 Bathurst Street).

CHEFS

  • Chef Mischa celebrates his last dinner at Marben (488 Wellington Street West) with a farewell pig roast on Sunday, April 29th.

OTHER NEWS

  • O&B, Bayview Village (2901 Bayview Avenue) is now sporting a new look and menu after completing recent renovations.
  • Toronto Office Markets are in full swing at two downtown locations. Get farm fresh goodies Tuesdays from 11:30am to 1:30pm at The Centre for Social Innovation Annex Lounge Market (720 Bathurst Street) and on Thursdays from 11:30am to 1:30pm at the ING DIRECT Café Market (221 Yonge Street).
