Taste of the Danforth

Taste of the Danforth

Taste of the Danforth runs this weekend in Toronto. Danforth Avenue from Broadview to Jones is now closed to traffic as Greektown kicked off its 17th annual Taste of the Danforth festival last night. I, being (sadly) vegetarian, was dubious of my sampling options during our visit to the very meat-heavy event. But, flaky spanakopita and crunchy roasted corn were abundant and cheap. My carnivorous companion braved snaking lines to savour the meaty offerings from pork souvlaki to grilled calamari and shrimp skewers. Don't let the lines scare you - cash-only means they move fast. Seating is limited, too, so expect to eat on the run. And to spill tzatziki sauce on your date (ahem).

Retro carnival games and lively international music acts attempted to attract crowds, but there was no denying that the food was the true star of the show. Come for a taste of Greek culture and cuisine, and stay for the jam-packed schedule of events taking place over the weekend.

Taste of the Danforth runs until this Sunday, August 8th at 8:00 pm.
