What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

Ontario Economic Development Minister Michael Bryant is giving up his plum position as an MPP and cabinet member to head up Invest Toronto, a new corporation aimed at bringing money into Toronto. The Canadian wings of GM and Chrysler may not be too happy as Bryant has been their key liaison between the Ontario and Federal governments. But Bryant is off to "develop the city's extensive real estate holdings and promote investment through marketing and trade missions," which I think is another way of saying fewer headaches than auto industry bailouts negotiations and a ton more money.

Rumbles and grumbles from Ottawa lately have hinted at a summer election but with the Conservatives expected to announce improvements to EI later today the Liberals have strengthened their message about what kind of EI reform they say is necessary. And if Harper & Co. don't deliver (and they promised they won't), we'll be stuffing the ballot box before strawberry season is over.

Toronto police officers are going green in their new state-of-the-art training facility in south Etobicoke. The 270,000 square foot facility is apparently equipped with a green roof, geothermal energy and more and by mid-July will be fully staffed. Something tells me plug-in squad cars aren't in the short-term plans, though.

A 19 year old York U student is missing, last seen at the bar at an Ontario Place formal shortly after midnight 10 days ago. Shane Fair was celebrating the end to a tough semester and his disappearance have police and family baffled. What has me baffled is why it takes 10 days to make the news. Let's hope in a few more days police aren't calling it an abduction and that everything turns out better than it has in Woodstock.

Gasp! Is the Toronto Catholic school board willfully neglecting a historic building so they can tear it down? Councillor Howard Moscoe says so and isn't happy that the TCDSB applied for a permit to destroy the O'Connor mansion (of Laura Secord riches) near Victoria Park and Lawrence Avenues. Nice to see a Toronto councillor work to preserve our historic buildings for a change.

The Bad News Blue Jays turned in frustrating and disappointing performances all weekend in Atlanta, wiping away Cito's fond memories of the last time he managed there (i.e. in the World Series).
