Morning Brew: February 12th, 2009

What's happening in the GTA (and sometimes beyond):

Old, dilapidated water infrastructure, combined with ongoing, super freaky weather fluctuations are causing all all kinds of new problems for the city. Last night, a water main broke causing the flooding and closure of Union Station's commuter concourse. It's reopened this morning after a frantic fix and clean up, but elevators and escalators remain out of service. Check out amateur video of the staircase waterfalls.

Thou shalt not steal credit cards from folks at church. While it's not clear exactly from the Globe and Mail article how the scam is being executed, it is clear that criminals have no boundaries.

If we're going to continue to fuel consumer-driven events like Valentine's Day, we might as well be eco-wise about it, right? While "green roses" sound strange, the concept behind fair trade flowers is commendable.

It's been 14 months since the murder of muslim teen Aqsa Parvez shocked the city, and world. Now a New York City blogger is disappointed that the $4000 she helped raise to have a gravestone memorial designed (complete with inscription the "Loved, Remembered, Free") is not wanted by the family. Is it just me, or is this blogger out to lunch? I mean, shouldn't the family be able to chose how she's remembered, and not the "34th best-known blogger on the web"?

Former Toronto Blue Jays second baseman Roberto Alomar is being taken to court by his ex-girlfriend, who claims he "insisted on unprotected sex for four years despite having AIDS". This is a terrible situation no matter how valid or baseless her accusations are.
