Your Toronto morning news roundup for Wednesday September 10th, 2008:

What better way to ponder the question "Is advertising out of control" than to take it to new levels in Toronto? CFRB is under the microscope for using homeless people to promote their radio station. Is it a great idea (employing those in need) or a total farce (exploitation in its simplest form)? Great debate is taking place on Torontoist.

Councillor Giorgio Mammoliti wants a low-life harbouring booze can in the Jane-Finch area shut down. If he gets his way, that'll be four places he's targeted and successfully had closed for liquor violations.

19 public high schools (including my former teenage academic haunt), along with 8 catholic high schools have been named as locations for planned police presence (aka 'community building'). The police will be armed and in uniform, and have their own office space in many cases. I would have loved to be a fly on the wall during decision-making, to learn how these schools were chosen.

Four people have been shot in just over 24h in Toronto, making us wonder if the media will use the wild wild west spin or squeeze these incidents into the 'summer of the gun' package they tried to deliver back in mid-summer.

Attitudes toward bottled water are finally shifting. Waterloo region city council is the latest to ban the wasteful product in regional sites. Bottling company Nestle responded to the news by revoking their plan to assist in keeping parks clean. Take that!

The Toronto Blue Jays took both games in their double-header with Chicago to bring their winning streak to 10 games, and are now 43-27 since Cito Gaston returned as coach. Unfortunately, it's probably too late for them to make the playoffs.
