Finding Ways to Beat the Heat

Morning Brew: August 1, 2006

Your morning news roundup for Tuesday, August 1, 2006:

The big news today? The heat. With temperatures reaching 36 degrees (before the humidex) today, a new report is saying that smog will cause over 8,000 premature deaths in 20 years. Despite the heat, city cooling centres remain pretty empty, but Toronto pools and splash pads are full of kids trying to keep cool. And while the temperature is heating up, tempers must be rising too, as another shooting rang out in the city's east end on the heels of a home invasion downtown yesterday morning.

In other news, Toronto Police are trying to cut down on pocket bike riding, because pocket bikes don't belong on streets, they belong in music videos.

The city's getting a new arts festival called LuminaTO. They rejected my proposed name: AboutTimeTO.

Howard Moscoe has run into trouble again, this time not for the TTC, but for sending out an email. No, it wasn't one of those annoying forwards.
