This Week in Comedy: Comedee's at Sneaky Dee's, ALTdot Comedy Lounge, Andre Arruda, Paul Morrissey, and John Witherspoon

This week, a comic's performance leaves me gasping for words, and I've seen a TON of comedians. Who is it? Follow me as I walk you through This Week In Comedy and I'll show you...

SUN AUG 26 / COMEDEE'S AT SNEAKY DEE'S / SNEAKY DEE'S / 431 COLLEGE W / 9PM / FREE

The line-up will feature a few awesome comics and a great MC in Jeff Leeson, but we have to reserve as many characters as possible in this review for your headliner, Monty Scott. I've seen comedians raise audiences into a fervour based on an assault of jokes, crowd work, and acting -- that's rare, but I've seen it. What sets Monty apart is that he'll have the audience roaring...but then stop, take a sip of his beer, let the audience settle down, and then dive into another joke that kicks off another applause break. In a world full of copycats, Monty Scott's a truly unique comedian. Heck, the guy won the award for, 'Best Joke' at an awards show RUN BY COMICS.

WED AUG 29 - SUN SEPT 2 / ANDRE ARRUDA / YUK YUK'S / 224 RICHMOND W / 8PM / $11-20

In the above clip, Andre seamlessly combines his material, crowd work, and improv, each element woven together into a smooth and coherent act. His jokes are on point, his improvisation casual, his stories engrossing. With talent like that, he's been featured on everything from MuchMusic's Video on Trial to An Evening with Kenny Smith 2.

WED AUG 29 - SUN SEPT 2 / PAUL MORRISSEY feat. ALASTAIR MCALSTAIR / ABSOLUTE COMEDY / 8PM / $6-15

There's nothing like truth in comedy, and that's why Paul Morrissey's the man. His delivery is...ok wait: I don't often do this, but please stop reading and press play.

MON AUG 27 / ALTdot COMEDY LOUNGE / RIVOLI / 332 QUEEN W / 9PM / $5

There's nowhere in Toronto where you can find these many legitimate headliners taking five-minute sets, courtesy of the hard-working Morgan Flood and the team at Diamondfield Entertainment. K Trev Wilson recently won Just For Laugh's Homegrown Competition, Arthur Simeon (featured) has been on HBO, Nathan Macintosh was included in the, 'New Generation of Canadian Funny Men' by Sharp Magazine...you get the idea.

FRI AUG 31 / JOHN WITHERSPOON / SONY CENTRE FOR THE PERFORMING ARTS / 1 FRONT E / 8PM / $35-72

If you're like me, you recognize him from the movies, 'Friday' and, 'Bulworth.' Sweet sassie-molassie Bulworth was a good movie... John reminds me of my friends' West Indian uncles, their stories getting more and more interesting the older I got, presumably because they figured I was old enough to hear the good stuff. And like an older uncle, the hilarity is derived from the fact that they are observing history repeat itself, only now wearing a new disguise. The featured clip entitled, 'Hoochies' will give you an idea of what I mean.
