Star Trek Day Toronto

Are you ready for Star Trek Day in Toronto?

Nuit Blanche 2011 may be the talk of the town today, but the nerds of this city will likely pack it in early tonight to make sure they're fresh for the city's first ever Star Trek Day on Sunday. Taking place at the Toronto Underground Cinema, the tribute is something of a companion to Star Wars Day, which had its inaugural celebration on May 4th (get it?). After the success of that event, people started asking why there wasn't a Star Trek Day, which was enough to get the ball rolling for Sally Christensen and the so-called Nerd Mafia who put together tomorrow's festivities.

Things get underway at 12 p.m. on Sunday with "Star Trek 101" — an introduction to the institution that is Star Trek, which should prepare the less than fanatical for the trivia contest later in the day. But, let's be serious, if you need the brush-up, you aren't going to be taking home any prizes at trivia. That's not to say, however, that you can't put together the best costume, for which there will also be a contest.

Given the subject matter and location, there will also be screenings. First up is Wrath of Khan to be followed by the super-high budget and well-pulled off Star Trek from 2009. After 7 p.m., "evening programming" will begin for the adult crew. Featured performers include comedy by Nerdy Little Secret, music by Nerds with Guitars, and there'll be burlesque acts, too — because that's how James T. Kirk would have wanted it.

Tickets for Star Trek Day are $14 / $7 (12 and under) for the day, and $15 for the evening (19+).
