As the effects of the deadly double disaster in Japan begin to settle in, individuals in Toronto continue to organize events contributing to relief efforts. Bakers across the city recently teamed up for Toronto Bakes for Japan, which was held at the Evergreen Brick Works and raised over $5,000. Other Torontonians have banned together to hold comedy shows, concerts, and special fundraising sales with proceeds being donated to victims and their families.

As coverage of Japan ostensibly continues to slow down, it's good to see fundraising efforts in Toronto continue to march on. Here are some upcoming events for Japan being held in Toronto.

April 15: HELP JAPAN Benefit Show

This concert is being held at The Garrison and asks for a minimum $5 donation at the door. Performers include Modernboys Moderngirls, Make Your Exit, The Elwins, HotKid. York University's Japanese International Students Association will also be folding paper cranes in The Garrison, with proceeds going to relief efforts.

April 16: Global PechaKucha Day - INSPIRE JAPAN

A global event, the Toronto fundraiser will be held at Design Exchange. It will feature 20x20 presentations by speakers including Jeremy Vandermeij and Zahra Ebrahim, and will focus on issues of Japanese inspiration and recovery. Suggested donation is $15 at the door.

April 16: Sushi Making for the Soul of Japanese Survivors

This is the second sushi fundraising event, and it's being held again at Liberty Noodle. For $25, you will learn how to make four different rolls (which you then get to eat) and proceeds will be donated to Japanese Red Cross, Doctors Without Borders and Second Harvest through Toronto To Japan Collective. Must reserve a spot ahead of time.

April 17: Artists Help Japan: Toronto

A 12-hour event hosted at Revival, Artists Help Japan will feature live art shows, a silent auction, and local artists and illustrators selling commissioned drawings, with proceeds going to the Canadian Red Cross. The event will run from 12 p.m. to 12 a.m. with free admission, and $1 from the sale of every drink will go to the Red Cross.

April 17: Nia Class for Japan Earthquake Relief

A pay-what-you-can Nia class where proceeds will be donated to the Canadian Red Cross. Hosted at Hart House from 12 p.m. to 2 p.m. in the Lower Gym. Non-U of T participants must register ahead of time.

April 21: Toronto to Japan: Hope Blossoms

Hosted by Mio and Nobu Adilman, the $40 event ($20 for students) at the TIFF Bell Lightbox is a variety show of sorts featuring such venerable speakers as Margaret Atwood, Michael Ondaatje, Jian Ghomeshi, Adrienne Clarkson and Bob Wiseman, to name just a few. It will also feature a silent auction, with proceeds going toward relief efforts.

May 3: To Japan With Love

A five-day art show held at Function 13 Gallery in Kensington Market, featuring art by Nick La, Paul Vickers, Yuko Itakura, Victor Xavier, and others. The event is pay-what-you-can at the door, with proceeds donated to the Canadian Red Cross.
