For the Social Butterfly: Fun Bus Times Two and World Photos

Photo: Finbarr O'Reilly, Canada, Reuters

I had thought perhaps Toronto artists would take a much needed break after Nuit Blanche. I was wrong; there are, as ever, a ton of happenings this week.

I missed the bus during Nuit Blanche, literally; I was distracted by a friend's shenanigans as the Toronto Public Transit Performance Commission passed us by. Thankfully, Performance busses seem to come in pairs as one departs this Wednesday, 6pm sharp from OCAD (Dundas and McCaul) with Dave Dyment and Roula Partheniou to the AGYU for the opening reception of Jeremy Deller: An AGYU retrospective at two sites, and yet another returns at 9pm.

The following night activites are filled with photography. Canadian photojournalist, Finbarr O'Reilly who is based in Dakar, Senegal, presents a lecture at the Center for Computer and Engineering at Ryerson, Theatre 103, 245 Church St. on Thursday, October 5, 7:30 pm. Finbarr O'Reilly's photo, seen here, was selected World Press Photo of the Year as part of The World Press Photo 06 which runs 7 am to 10 pm daily including Sundays and Thanksgiving, until October 22 at the Allen Lambert Galleria, BCE Place, 181 Bay St. Free.

In an ironic note, International Geographic, the book that questions the ethnics and boundaries of ethnographic photography, launches at the SAME TIME as Finbarr O'Reilly's lecture. Edited by Tam-Ca Vo-Van and Stefan St-Laurent, it contains essays by Catherine Russell, Trinh T. Minh-ha, Coco Fusco and Narendra Pachkhede. Thursday, October 5, 7-9 at YYZ Artists' Outlet, 401 Richmond St. W., Ste. 140 Toronto.
