Two is Company for Danceworks

Cute.

This is the one word that would best sum Danceworks' DW158 Corpus production as performed by Sylvie Bouchard (co- Artistic Director) and William Yong (formerly of Toronto Dance Theatre).Two is company is a comedic retrospective of the world's great lovers - fictional or otherwise - performed as a series of dance vignettes illustrating real or imagined events (think An American in Paris done to lounge music).

From the struggle the Prince to get to Rapunzel to the peace seeking missiles of Yoko Ono and John Lennon, practically every pairing you could think of has be represented.

Perhaps the strongest performance was of Sid and Nancy, a brilliant display of anarchy in dance. This was far more convincing than the controlled waltz of the Prince and Cinderella. As for Barbie and Ken? Well, one must applaud Bouchard and Yong for their acting ability as their rendition of the two plastic dolls brought to life was totally believable. But it was clear from the S&M sex sequence that Bouchard and co-choreographer David Danzon had seen the recent marionation movie Team America .

A delightful surprise was the fact that Yong can sing. Amusing too, since his rendition of Fred Astaire's "Heaven" was sung, in part, in Cantonese. But If I has any issue with the work it was the use of film soundtrack. The Popeye/Olive Oyl sequence was too much of a reproduction of the actual cartoon; I would have preferred to have guessed who the characters were, rather than have it spelled out.

In the end, Two is Company is a terpsichoric romp thought romantic love.

Two is Company continues at the Harbourfront Centre Theatre, 231 Queen's Quay W. tonight and Saturday, May 6th at 8pm. Tickets are $25 at 416-973-4000.
