blogTO Android app coming soon

Posted by Staff / May 31, 2012

toronto Android appFor the last year or so we've been fielding numerous questions and requests for an Android version of our popular blogTO iPhone app (also available for iPad). We're pleased to announce that, finally, later this summer an Android version will be coming out. It will include a lot of the features currently available in the iPhone version plus some new goodies.

If you'd like to be one of the first to get your hands on our Android app, all you need to do is add your email here. We'll then notify you as soon as it's ready.

Will it be as unfriendly as the Ipad App?

What don't you like about the iPad app? Please let us know what you'd like to see improved.

Congrats and all, but BlogTO should integrate itself more with the tools I already use, instead of flood my devices with unnecessary apps. Besides, it's a much smaller effort than creating and supporting mobile apps for every platform.

[1] Purpose your content for the Flipboard apps.
[2] Create your Best-Of lists on Foursquare and Yelp.

Now I can troll while mobile, f*cking sweet!

Um, sorry. We're not going to do that. There's a lot of functionality and design considerations we pack into our apps that make consuming our Best of Lists and other original blogTO content a much better experience within our apps than on these other services.

But others have indicated that the iPad application is not robust.

Why when clicking Nearby with the GPS arrow on the iPhone app does it take you to a list of neighbourhoods instead of using your gps....all the restaurants just say 0.0 KM....its kind of terrible
Tim replying to a comment from GPS? / May 31, 2012 at 12:42 pm
I'm not sure what you are talking about. Are you using the latest version of the app? Have you agreed to share your location with the app?

99% of the feedback we've received about the iPad app has been extremely favourable. Perhaps you can provide more specific feedback how we can improve the iPad app for your needs.

GPS? I think I know what you're referring to. The button that says "Nearby" is a sorting option. If you click it, you are given other options to sort such as by neighbourhood or TTC subway stop. If "Nearby" is already showing and that's how you want to sort the places than you don't need to click the button. Nearby is the default sorting parameter.

this discussion is not important.

How will BlogTO retain its linkfarm cred if it moves all of its SEO'd clickables off-site like that?
Freddie replying to a comment from Arrow / May 31, 2012 at 02:36 pm
Does anyone use 4square?

Joshua Errett? Is that you?
Jeff replying to a comment from Arrow / May 31, 2012 at 04:06 pm
Besides what Tim said, sure the reason why they won't do that is they won't get the advertising revenue. I don't mind the iPAD app. I am sure there are things that could be improved but off hand I can't recall them

I would complain about this ridiculous delay if I weren't expecting the same stock answer you get from all iOS developers: 'Fragmentation'. Protip for multi-res scalable Android apps: make backgrounds 4x and scale down.

Desktop app devs who work with dozens of resolutions continue to laugh at this phenomenon amongst mobile developers.

Jus' sayin'. Looking forward to it.

user-pic and National Post's lists link to their full-page reviews. I read them all the time when I'm looking for a place to visit (and clicks to their pages earn them their ad-revenue). BlogTO's missing out on an opportunity to expand their reach to people who don't frequently read their website.

The apps basically cater to people who already read their site.

Will the app contain details on how to get to the markham zoo?

Any response or update from BlogTO?
Thiago / January 31, 2013 at 12:56 pm
What happen to this? When is the app being released?
Tim replying to a comment from Thiago / January 31, 2013 at 02:04 pm
We are still working on the Android app. We expected to launch it quite a while ago but development has taken much longer than anticipated. We are getting much closer though, but for obvious reasons I don't think it makes sense for me to promise a specific date.
Merrill / May 9, 2013 at 04:52 pm
It's now May 9th. The last update was January 31st. Is it still coming?
harry / November 6, 2013 at 12:10 am
Any updates, it's been over 1.5 years guys...comeon already!
Tim replying to a comment from harry / November 6, 2013 at 09:56 am
We're hoping to have it ready before the end of the year. We've gone through a couple of development teams trying to get this built but for whatever reason the developers seem to not be able to get the job done. It's as frustrating for us as it is for you.
