It's no secret that Toronto has a housing problem. And this Thursday night, you can bust a move to help solve it. According to various sources, well over 60,000 people in Toronto are on the wait-list for social housing. The wait can be as long as a decade (yowza!) and physical or mental health issues can make it tough for some to find a safe, clean, and comfortable place to call home.

Houses Opening Today Toronto (HOTT) is a not-for-profit organization that provides subsidized housing for people at risk of becoming homeless, with a mandate that welcomes tenants with complex housing needs. HOTT already has 9 properties in Toronto, and their newest development, the Darrell Project, will open this spring to house up to 24 people near Woodbine & Gerrard.

To raise cash for the Darrell Project, HOTT has teamed up with the SHAMBA Foundation, a super-cool org with a gorgeous rooftop terrace at Yonge & Wellington. SHAMBA donates event space and resources to help local charities raise funds- and it's a sweet lookin' party spot, hey?

This Thursday night, they're hosting House Party 1988, an 80s pop night with retro tunes, breakdancers, and 80s trivia, plus a silent auction including urban photography by Adam Makarenko, DK Photo Group, and Sam Javanrouh. Badass acoustic cover band B.A. Baracus (aka Noel Jago and Matthew Dewar, pictured below), are slated for a performance as well, no doubt packed with references to Mr. T.

Tickets are $75 each or $140 for a pair (available online), and all proceeds go to the Darrell Project. So dig out your desert boots and shake it for the homeless, homefry!

I'd love to go, but alas, I can't. :( Everybody else should, though. :)

Great post, Stampy! This is a great event and such a good cause. I'm bummed that I have to miss it because I am far away. Thanks for your support!
